Led Flashlight

LED flashlights are Light Emitting Diode flashlights. In Britain LED flashlights are called as "LED torches". So LED flashlights are also known as LED torches. These are hand-held flashlights. In these flashlights light emitting diodes are used. Long ago the incandescent bulbs are used for lighting applications. In light emitting diodes new technologies are used when compared with the older technology of incandescent light bulbs.

At present there are many different colour LEDs are used. The different LED colors obtained by the use of variety inorganic semi-conductor materials. The bright blue LEDs were made from GaN (Gallium Nitride) and it was in 1992. It was concocted by Shuji Nakamura in Japan. After that the white LEDs are made. In this also the same technology that is in the blue LEDs are used.

The LED flashlights are very popular due to several advantages. The main advantage is that the lifetime of the LED flashlights. The awaited lifetime is up to 100,000 hours for LEDs. As compared to the conventional light bulbs LEDs are much durable. LED's power efficiency is very high, it is up to 40lm/W. Because of these advantages the LED flashlights are very popular.

In the LED flashlight one or two batteries are used because it needs a step up circuit. Usually 1. 5V batteries are used in this. A specific voltage is required for driving a LED and it is in between 3. 0V and 3. 6V.

Long ago conventional light bulbs are used for most applications. But modernly, in the place of these conventional light bulbs the flashlights which use light emitting diodes have become available, because these LEDs are very efficient and less expensive. And also it needs very low power than the light bulbs i.e. the power consumption of the LEDs are very low. The lifetime of the torches in which the LEDs are used is very longer than the others.

In some cases the hands must be free for specific applications. For such applications a new design is innovated in flashlights is the headlamp. A headlamp is the one in which a flashlight is worn on the head for hands-free operation. Now-a-days not only in the torches but in the headlamps also the LED flashlights are used. But in the headlamps the LEDs used are not normal. In these headlamps powerful LED flashlights are used. After developing the headlamps, these headlamps are then mounted on the helmets. These helmets are mainly used in mining for decades.

In the early days, variety of shapes and structures came in the design of flashlights. But, modernly most of the flashlights are cylindrical in shape and in which a lamp assembly is connected to one end. We found that in the early days the flashlights came in variety of designs. Lantern is one of them. It is a large box with a handle. And in the front of this box a lamp is connected. Many of them made a design which appears as a candle. By the intervention of new technologies in the future many new designs will arrive in the flashlights.
